From Wellington on the North Island we take the car on the ferry across the Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island, then drive to Nelson, to Carters Beach and then Hokitika. From there it is west up over Arthurs Pass to Christchurch for a few days before the flight to Sydney and Honolulu/Maui.
